Oh, and Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles kicks ass! Doing a secret review for it (I might do more of these if I have the time), the game is a sequel to the well selling Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles. The game stars Leon Scott Kennedy on a mission to South America with his partner, Jack Krauser. They were sent there to find a man named Javier Hidalgo and find out what exactly is going on there. During which, they are attacked by an onslaught of the T-Virus and Krauser wishes to know everything Leon does (This was there first time working together)
The game splits off telling about Raccoon City and Rockfort Island, which is really Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil: Code Veronica, while still going through with it's story of Operation Javier. The Resident Evil 2 portion was perfect. In Umbrella Chronicles, each story was really summed up in 3 chapters, with some pretty bad holes in the story, for example, no Barry or Enrico in Resident Evil, the lack of some of the bosses in Resident Evil 0 and...the incredible holes created in Resident Evil 3. The Resident Evil 2 portion of this was just perfect, right down to it. It made the story into eight chapters and made the story of it's own. It's like if you were playing Resident Evil 2 again, but instead of choosing Leon A/Claire B or Claire A/Leon B, there was a whole new choice Leon & Claire. The story did take a lot of elements for Claire A/Leon B, but it still had a taste that was all of it's own. There were changes that were involved, like how they met in the ensuing terror of the city, instead of at the gas station, and how the G-Mutant came right out of Irons, instead of a G parasite, but it all seemed fitting and they had everything in it. Kendo, Ben, Marvin, Mr.X's both forms, all of Birkin's forms, HUNK, the guy calling the rescue chopper, Annette, everything was there and it was all epic. I really loved the 2nd battle with Birkin, how they made it so you fought form 2, 3, and 4 all at the same time. To get nit picky, John was only hinted at and Brad's zombie didn't appear, but in reality, it doesn't really matter if they did or not. The whole story of 2 was a blast and I loved every minute of it.
As for Code Veronica, the story was changed more than Resident Evil 2. It still kept the main premise, but it was more in the perspective of Claire. Steve was more likable in this game, and Alfred...Damn, he was awesome. Alfred, as creepy/hilarious as he was in Code Veronica, this Alfred tops the cake. He's so insane, especially with all the drawings they did on the walls and how he sang the song at the top. Not as Alexia, but as himself and god, it was awesome. I'll probably play that chapter over and over again just to hear it XD Still, the story is fantastic. The only flaw is, at the last chapter, I haven't found out yet if I can unlock a chapter for Chris, but really the last chapter is the only chapter with Claire and Chris and it picks off right when he saves her. That means all the scenes with Alexia are narrowed down into one chapter, and Wesker only appeared as a shadowy character. It was still cool, but I really hoped to be able to fight him with Chris. Long story short, Code Veronica is an excellent scenario, spanning in 7 chapters, but it's just not perfection like how Resident Evil 2 was.
Now, for the new scenario, it was actually a lot better than the new scenario for Umbrella Chronicles. Instead of just a random rush fight to a monster, they made a pretty good story out of it. I wont spoil it, but the only disappointment factor is it's the shortest story, 5 chapters long, but there's hope cause it gives away there's at least more to unlock for that scenario. I just haven't yet XD Oh, and they really made the things better in that story. If only they made that story longer, more improved and detailed, that should've been Resident Evil 4 XD
Now, to wrap things up. The gameplay is awesome. The controls can now all be used with the Wiimote itself, so it fits with the Handgun accessory I had gotten. There are now two separate health bars, so it makes it funner to protect yourself and your ally, who is always on screen with you which is a plus. When you play 2 player, you share ammo, so it's realistic and gives you the knowledge to conserve your ammo wisely. You can even change what your guns your using anytime in the game. The game is a lot funner that Umbrella Chronicles and I have to thank the shaky camera. Some people have complained, cause it makes you delirious and such, but really I never felt sick off it and I love the feel of it. It makes it so your shots can miss, you wont expect what's gonna happen and above all, it really gets you more into the game way better than Umbrella Chronicles did. There's plenty of things to unlock, like alternate outfits, scenarios and a Tofu mode I hope to get soon, character/enemy bios almost all featuring models of them, voice data which I haven't gotten one yet XD, items and files like how they were in Umbrella Chronicles, and even achievements like how they are for Xbox 360. You can upload your scores on Wi-Fi, but it's pretty empty at the moment, so it's not really anything special yet. Finally, there's customizing your guns, which sadly, I wont recommend doing. I think that's what actually killed some of the joy in Umbrella Chronicles. When I was playing Resident Evil 2, I didn't upgrade anything at first and the challenge was there, even at easy and it was still incredibly fun. I upgraded my guns later and it was a piece of cake to do. If you want a more easier time defeating foes, I'd do it, but really the funnest thing to do is not upgrade anything.
So that's Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles, and how do I think it holds up? Well, the music and sounds, as well as the graphics are superb and the voice acting is some of the best I've heard in awhile for Resident Evil. Sure, the only voice I kinda don't like as much is Ben's, but that's just I thought his original voice was perfect. As I've mentioned, like how the highlight of Umbrella Chronicles was the Resident Evil scenario, the highlight here is Resident Evil 2, but where the other story's weren't really that impressive, they really did a great job with Code: Veronica and Operation Javier. I had some hopes crushed, and some hopes fulfilled, but I still am hoping to unlock the other mysteries in this hopefully and even if they don't get fulfilled, like a Chris chapter before he ran into Claire, I'll still love the game. It really took the good game of Umbrella Chronicles and made it into something far better. I give the game an A- and still has me hoping that Capcom will turn Resident Evil into a greater franchise.
